Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton Headed to 10-Day IL for Left Hamstring Strain

The New York Yankees announced on Sunday that their star player, Giancarlo Stanton, was put on the injury list because he strained his left hamstring. He had just hit a double in the game from Saturday and asked for someone else to run for him. To get a better understanding of how serious this injury is, he will have an MRI scan.

Manager Aaron Boone said they are going to look at the results of an MRI (which is a test) before their game against the Minnesota Twins. He explained that Giancarlo Stanton, who had played in 13 games so far and got an IL stint, seemed okay but not as good as before. Stanton has gotten four home runs and eleven RBIs (runs batted in) so far this season while he was playing between the outfield and designated hitter positions.

Since 2011, Stanton has had an injury every year except for 2014, 2017 and 2018. This season is the fifth consecutive year that he’s gotten hurt in some way.

Last year, he couldn’t play for over a month because of a tendon problem called tendinitis in his left ankle. The Yankees didn’t win many games while Stanton was out — only 11 out of 17 played. In 2022 he got inflammation in his right ankle and had to miss nine games. In 2021 he played more games than before since 2018 but had another injury afterwards where his left quadriceps was strained.

Boone was asked why Stanton is getting hurt so often. He said that even though Stanton exercises a lot to avoid such incidents, it’s happened for him before. Aaron Stanton is a four-time All-Star with an impressive .264 batting average, plus 382 home runs and 928 RBIs.

To replace the injured Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees have brought up infield prospect Oswald Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In nine games this year, he has a batting average of .289 and lost the spring training shortstop competition with Anthony Volpe. Last year, when he made his first Major League appearance, Peraza batted .306 with one home run and two runs batted in (RBIs) over 18 games. During these appearances, he played 11 games at shortstop, three games at second base and even was the starting shortstop in Game 2 of their ALCS series against Houston.
