New Orleans is a major city located in the state of Louisiana, United States. It was founded by French colonists in 1718 and has since become an important cultural center known for its unique cuisine, music, architecture, and many festivals. With a population of over 390 thousand people as of 2019 it is the largest city in Louisiana and one of the most populous cities on the Gulf Coast region.

The original site where New Orleans was founded was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as Chitimacha and Houma before European settlers arrived there in 1699 led by Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville. By 1718 they had developed what would eventually be called New Orleans after Philippe II Duke d’Orleans who had been Regent to King Louis XIV at that time. During much of its early history New Orleans served as an important port for trade between Europe and North America which helped to make it into an economic hub with strong ties to both nations . In addition during this period many African slaves were brought over from Africa through these ports making up another large part of its population . The culture created through all three influences still can be seen today throughout various aspects such as language , food , music , art etc .

Though officially taken under control by Spain briefly following France’s defeat during Seven Years War (1756-63) soon afterwards Napoleon Bonaparte sold off their portion back to United States leading to becoming part US again 1803 via “Louisiana Purchase” agreement thus opening area further settlement development particularly among Germans Irish while also allowing significant influxs enslaved Africans coming into country due demand work plantations needed produce cotton other crops supplying international markets new arrivals bringing their own traditions customs adding even more diversity region’s fabric life

After Civil War ended 1865 Reconstruction Era began when Union forces occupied South until 1877 ushering era Jim Crow laws segregation ultimately disenfranchising black citizens barring them access voting rights educational opportunities basic services resources This resulted decline socio-economic conditions community alongside rise crime rates living poverty level As result white flight occurred leaving behind low income neighborhoods filled predominantly African Americans creating stark divides existing within communities continues present day though some progress been made narrowing gaps
