Movie musicals

by Joshua Brown

Movie musicals are a unique and popular genre of film that features singing, dancing, and other forms of music-related performances. They began to gain traction in the late 1920s as sound technology improved and allowed for more complex scenes than previously possible with silent films alone. The first major success was 1942’s “The Wizard Of Oz” which featured Judy Garland in her iconic role as Dorothy Gale. This set off a wave of similar releases over the next two decades such as “Singin’ In The Rain”, “An American In Paris”, and “West Side Story”.

In modern times there has been a resurgence in popularity due to hits like Disney’s adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway show “Into The Woods” (2014)  and La La Land (2016). These new entries have gained both critical acclaim from fans old and new alike while also winning numerous awards including Oscars for Best Picture. Movie musicals continue to be produced today by studios all around the world, bringing joyous entertainment into our lives through song & dance numbers unlike any other type of cinematic experience available.
