Montana is a state located in the Western United States. It became the 41st state of the Union on November 8, 1889, making it one of the last states to join the Union. Montana borders North Dakota and South Dakota to its east; Wyoming to its south; Idaho and Washington to its west; and Canada’s provinces Saskatchewan and British Columbia to its north. The capital city is Helena, while other major cities include Billings, Bozeman, Butte-Silver Bow (formerly just Butte), Great Falls, Missoula and Kalispell. With an area of 147 045 square miles (380 732 km²) Montana is slightly larger than Germany but smaller than Japan or Thailand.

The population of Montana as estimated by US Census Bureau stood at 1 015 614 people in 2017 with most inhabitants living along eastern border due mostly because many businesses are based there since transportation routes run through those areas for economic reasons more so than elsewhere in this sparsely populated landscape . Most Montanans are white with Native American populations representing about 7% , African Americans less then 2 % , Asian Americans around 3%, Pacific Islander’s approximately 0 .3 % Hawaiians & Alaska Natives combined being under 1%. Hispanic & Latino origin make up nearly 5 % according their latest census report from 2010 which puts them slightly above national average for all U S states/territories .

Montana enjoys a temperate climate throughout much of year however during winter months temperatures drop significantly into negative digits resulting snowfall across many parts especially northern regions near Canadian border where temperatures may reach -30 °F (- 34°C) or lower depending upon elevation level etc .. Summertime highs generally stay between 70–90 °F (21- 32°C ) although some mountainous locations can experience higher readings due increased altitudes such as Glacier National Park situated northwest corner bordering both Alberta & British Columbia Provinces respectively
