Minor league baseball, also known as Minor Baseball or MiLB, is the collective name for professional baseball leagues in the United States and Canada that are affiliated with Major League Baseball (MLB). These leagues have been in existence since 1876. The term “minor” refers to their level of play which is below that of MLB teams.

The minor league consists of several levels organized from lowest to highest classification: A-level rookie ball; short season Single-A; full season Single-A; Double-A; Triple-A or International League; Mexican Pacific Winter League and all other foreign winter leagues, such as Caribbean Series. All players in these minors must be under contract with an MLB team, either through a major league organization or directly by signing a minor league contract. Players who are not on an active roster at any given time may be loaned out to another club’s affiliate for development purposes only during the regular season but cannot appear on the 25 man roster until September 1st when rosters expand from 25 to 40 men per team due to injury replacements etc..
