Mining accidents by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 59 Mining Accidents are disasters that occur in the process of mining minerals. Thousands of miners die from mining accidents each year, especially in developing countries with lax regulations and technology. Mining is dangerous work; it involves exposure to hazardous conditions including underground explosions, cave-ins, toxic fumes or gases, and dust. Every country has its own safety regulations regarding such hazards as well as a designated body responsible for enforcing them. History §§ 1000The earliest known mine disaster was recorded over 4500 years ago when an Egyptian miner died after being buried by limestone debris while working on building projects within the Great Pyramid of Giza in 2450BCE. Since then hundreds of thousands more have been killed due to collapses, explosions and other related incidents throughout history up until today’s modern era where increased safety measures often reduce risk but can never completely eliminate it all together . Reports show that between 2000-2009 nearly 50000 miners lost their lives worldwide due to various types of accidents associated with mineral extraction activities . Notable Examples: In Europe one notable accident occurred at Courrières Mine Disaster which happened in 1906 near Lens France resulting in 1099 deaths making it not only one worst coal mining tragedies ever seen but also largest industrial disaster pre World War I period . In United States similar scale events include Monongah West Virginia explosion 1907 (362 fatalities) ; Coal Creek Tennessee explosion 1911 (84 deaths); Marianna Pennsylvania Colliery Explosion 1919 (195 casualties ) among many others occurring since 1800’s leading into present day times where although overall number decreased slightly still remains significant problem affecting industry around globe Another major incident took place 2014 Chile San Jose copper mine collapse trapping 33 workers 2200 feet below surface who were later rescued after 69 days spent trapped deep underground before finally being brought safely back out world watching anxiously awaiting news every step way Safety Standards & Protocols: To prevent future occurrences governments around world implemented set standards protocols aiming decrease chance similar catastrophes happening again example China Ministry Labor announced plans create new task force charged inspecting regulating compliance amongst state owned enterprises 2011 followed EU enacting laws requiring member states comply certain rules order ensure safe environment worksites next same year US Department Interior issue memorandum containing emergency temporary standard addressing diesel particulate matter methane roof control plan requirements 2013 current still effect minimizing risks operators face during course daily operations Conclusion: Despite best efforts no system absolute however continued push toward improving existing ones may help further reducing impression tragic stories leave behind
