Michigan

Michigan is a state located in the Great Lakes and Midwestern regions of the United States. It is the tenth most populous of the 50 states, with more than 10 million residents as of 2020. The capital city is Lansing; other major cities include Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Warren and Ann Arbor. Michigan’s area includes two peninsulas that are separated by Lake Michigan to form what has been called “The Mitt” shape—the Upper Peninsula (Upper Pen) to its north and Lower Peninsula (Lower Pen) to its south. The Upper Pen borders Wisconsin on both sides and Wisconsin’s waters flow into four out of five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario which makes up about 63% of water boundary for Michigan.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes including Ojibwa/Chippewa peoples who lived around Lake Huron since before European contact began in 1620s through 19th century treaties such as Treaty Of Saginaw resulting in them ceding their lands east & lower peninsula while retaining upper-peninsula – they remain an important part today maintaining several reservations throughout the state but especially within UP where tribal members make up 11 percent population according to 2019 US census data estimates making it one largest concentrations native people anywhere outside Alaska or Oklahoma respectively .
Michigan became a U.S territory following British surrender at end War 1812 when Congress passed Northwest Ordinance allowing entry union 1787 then was admitted 26th State Jan 26 1837 thus becoming first westward expansion beyond original 13 colonies despite being third oldest settlement behind Massachusetts(1630s)and Virginia(1607).

Economically diversified , with automotive industry playing key role accounting for 20 percent employment statewide earning title “Motor City” due fact Ford Motor Company headquartered Dearborn just outside Detroit established 1903 .
