The Metropolitan Museum of Art (often referred to as the Met) is a renowned art museum in New York City. It was founded in 1870 and its permanent collection includes over two million works of art, covering five thousand years of world culture from prehistory to present day. The mission of the Met is “to collect, preserve, study, exhibit, and stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement at the highest level”.
