by Joshua Brown

The Met Gala (formally known as the Costume Institute Benefit) is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the institute’s annual fashion exhibit. The event also serves as a showcase for top designers to display their latest creations and helps raise money to fund future exhibits at The Met.

History

The first Met Gala took place on May 5, 1948, with 400 guests attending including then-New York Governor Thomas E Dewey, movie stars Lauren Bacall and Rita Hayworth among many other celebrities from across industries. Since its founding it has been one of most prestigious events in American society circles due to its exclusivity combined with high profile guest list that consists mainly of Hollywood A-listers and world renowned fashion figures such as Anna Wintour who has been chairwoman since 1995. This exclusive atmosphere along with themed dress codes have resulted in some memorable red carpet moments over time while making it one of America’s most popular social occasions each year leading up to it being referred to commonly by media outlets simply “the party of year”.

Format & Theme

Every year there is a different theme chosen which all attendees must adhere too when selecting their outfits – though this rule isn’t strictly enforced they are expected take part anyway or risk not receiving another invitation back next year! For example previous themes include “Manus X Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology” (2016), “China: Through The Looking Glass” (2015), “Punk: Chaos To Couture” (2013) etc… Each theme usually ties into current cultural trends however often uses historical references ranging from ancient civilizations through classic art periods like Baroque era pieces right down modern day aesthetics based around subcultures such pop music scenes or film franchises like Star Wars; thus creating an interesting juxtaposition between old/new within context new couture designs created specifically fit specific occasion itself!

Impact

Over years increase media coverage surrounding these events has made them more accessible general public despite fact still remains very much closed door affair limited few hundred select people can attend but even so imagery captured throughout night invariably makes way onto front covers magazines worldwide helping spread awareness amongst wider audience inspiring creativity fashion fans alike – whether consciously or unconsciously influenced creative direction taken by designer labels themselves afterwards either way effect undeniable testament staying power long after actual event fades memory…
