Manila by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 89 Manila is the capital and largest city of the Philippines. It is one of the most densely populated cities in Southeast Asia, with an estimated population of 1.78 million as of 2021. Located at the mouth of Manila Bay on Luzon island, it has been a main part of Philippine history since its foundation by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi in 1571. The coastal settlement quickly grew into a major trading hub for Chinese, Indian and Arab merchants due to its strategic location along Pacific trade routes. During colonial times under Spain (1571-1898), Manila became an important center for political power and governance – eventually becoming known as “The Pearl Of The Orient”. In 1898, after more than 300 years under Spanish rule, control over Manila was ceded to America during the Treaty Of Paris following Spain’s defeat in their war against US forces led by Commodore George Dewey at Battle Of Manila Bay.
