Lewis A. Kaplan by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 74 Lewis A. Kaplan (born 1952) is an American lawyer, judge and government official from New York City. He currently serves as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York, in which he was appointed by President Bill Clinton on December 12th 1998 and confirmed unanimously by the US Senate two months later. Early life & education Kaplan was born in 1952 to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York and graduated with honors from Harvard College with his Bachelors degree in 1974 before going on to Yale Law School where he obtained his Juris Doctorate degree three years later. Prior to becoming a judge Kaplan served as both Deputy Counselor at White & Case LLP and Partner at Kaye Scholer LLP; In addition he also worked briefly at Debevoise & Plimpton prior to joining the bench. Judicial career Upon being sworn into office on February 23rd 1999 Judge Kaplan began serving honorably during his time adjudicating cases within the Southern District courtroom, ranging from complex civil litigation matters such as copyright infringement all the way up through criminal proceedings involving terrorism charges against individuals such as Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani who had direct involvement with al-Qaeda activities following 9/11 attacks upon NYC’s World Trade Center Towers back 2001..In addition throughout 2004–2005 Lewis represented himself pro se while successfully defending fellow federal jurists regarding bogus allegations of misconduct stemming off initial judicial appointments made under then president George W Bush administration – resulting him gaining respect amongst peers across all political lines . On January 3rd 2011 after over 10 years presiding justice Kaplan assumed senior status among other judges within same district court , allowing more flexibility focus towards other endeavors outside courtroom settings .
