Kathmandu by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 85 Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal. Located in the Kathmandu Valley, it has a population of 1.5 million as of 2021 and serves as an important economic, cultural, industrial and political hub for both Nepal and South Asia. The city stands at an elevation of about 1500 m (4200 ft) above sea level in central Nepal. It is located within close proximity to the Himalayan mountain range which lies across much of northern South Asia including parts of India, China, Bhutan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The history surrounding Kathmandu dates back to ancient times when it was known as Kantipur or “City Of Glory” during medieval Hindu rule between 12th-14th century CE before being conquered by invading Mughal forces from Afghanistan led by Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq who renamed the city after himself; thus its current name derives from his original title ‘Kathmahand’. Since then numerous dynasties have ruled over this area until recently when it became part of modern day Nepal under King Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unified kingdom established in 1768 AD following centuries long struggle against oppressive rulers like Gurkhas & British Raj Empire respectively . Today Kathmandu remains one major center for culture & religion with majority consisting Hindus while Buddhism also having strong influence among people living here thanks largely due its close connection with Tibet where these two religions are practiced side-by-side since many centuries ago despite recent influxes immigrants coming other countries such India giving rise multiculturalism seen today’s society especially near tourist areas like Thamel district near Durbar square containing famous temples Vishnu , Shiva etc..
