It is bordered by Nebraska to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. With an estimated population of 2,913,314 as of 2019 census estimates,[1] it is ranked 34th in terms of population among all U.S. states.[2] The capital city of Kansas is Topeka with other major cities being Wichita and Overland Park. The name “Kansas” comes from a Native American tribe known as Kansa who lived in this region prior to European settlement.[3] In 1854 Kansas became part of what was then called “Bleeding Kansas” due to its role at that time during heated debates over slavery which ultimately led up until 1861 when it officially become a state under President Abraham Lincoln’s leadership after joining forces with both pro-slavery and anti-slavery supporters alike.[4][5] Today Kansas has an economy based largely on agriculture but also includes manufacturing industries such as aircraft parts production for Boeing Co., automobile parts production for General Motors Corp., food processing companies like Tyson Foods Inc., healthcare providers like HCA Healthcare Inc., energy producers such as Koch Industries Inc., financial services firms including Fidelity Investments Inc., plus many more across various sectors making up around 11% overall GDP contribution each year according US Bureau Labor Statistics data from 2018.[6][7] Notably education level remains relatively high here compared some other states ranking 10th nationally for median household income levels 2017 fiscal year statistics show[8], while also having number one rated public schools system (in accordance National Assessment Educational Progress figures) since 2013/2014 school years research indicates too[9]. Additionally there are several universities available within state boundaries offering wide array higher educational degrees ranging anything associate’s undergraduate doctorate programs – example these include University Of Kansas Lawrence , Emporia State University Emporia etcetera [10].
