Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan. It has been an important site throughout history, serving as a strategic point between Central Asia and South Asia for centuries. The city lies at an elevation of 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) in the Kabul Valley along the Kabul River.

The earliest known reference to Kabul dates back to 500 BC when it was mentioned by Herodotus in his Histories as Καυπάλιον or Kapaualon (“the place where one finds grapes”) during Alexander’s conquests. In 330 BC, it was conquered by Alexander the Great who named it Alexandria Arachosia after himself; this name later became “Kapousa” which eventually evolved into modern day “Kabul”.
