Kabul by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 53 Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan. It has been an important site throughout history, serving as a strategic point between Central Asia and South Asia for centuries. The city lies at an elevation of 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) in the Kabul Valley along the Kabul River. The earliest known reference to Kabul dates back to 500 BC when it was mentioned by Herodotus in his Histories as Καυπάλιον or Kapaualon (“the place where one finds grapes”) during Alexander’s conquests. In 330 BC, it was conquered by Alexander the Great who named it Alexandria Arachosia after himself; this name later became “Kapousa” which eventually evolved into modern day “Kabul”. During Islamic rule over Afghanistan from 7th century onwards until today, Kabul served as a cultural center due to its location at a crossroads connecting Middle East with Central Asian countries such China and India through Khyber Pass located near Pakistan border only 25 miles away from Afghan Capital City!. In 1747 Ahmad Shah Durrani established his own dynasty after conquering most parts of what is now Afghanistan including capital city of that time Kandahar but he moved his government seat to more strategically placed town nearer northern borders- making current Afghan Capitol – KABUL!
