Joe Manchin

Joe Manchin (born August 24, 1947) is an American politician who has served as the senior United States Senator from West Virginia since 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously was Governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and Secretary of State of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. He won a special election in November 2010 following the death of Robert Byrd and took office in January 2011.

Manchin began his political career with service on local boards before being elected mayor at age 27; he later went on to serve as chairman for both houses of state legislature prior to becoming secretary of state in 2000, winning re-election twice without opposition. In 2004, Manchin ran for governor against Republican Monty Warner but lost by less than 1%. Afterward, Manchin was appointed chairperson for several government committees related to energy development and economic growth initiatives that helped him win reelection two years later by more than 40% over Republican Russel Weeks despite unpopularity nationwide towards Democrats due to Iraq war policies during George W Bush’s presidency .

In September 2009, after incumbent senator Robert Byrd announced plans not seek another term , Joe entered into race for U.S Senate seat vacated upon Byrds retirement . During campaign season ,Man chins platform focused primarily on job creation through public works projects such as highway construction ,as well reducing taxes while maintaining balanced budget ; taking moderate stances when it came social issues like abortion rights or same sex marriage which allowed appeal wide range voters throughout state including traditionally conservative areas rural Appalachia . His efforts paid off when became first Democrat statewide victory since 1992 garnering 59% vote total defeating John Raese opponent even though national pendulum had shifted rightwards midterms elections earlier year ..

Following successful senate bid continued focus creating jobs utilizing natural resources unique region promoting balance between traditional industry production clean renewable sources energy future prosperity generations come … As result recognized leader legislative measures promote responsible coal mining practices ensure sustainable economy Appalachian region while also take stand important topics today immigration reform health care access climate change gun control etc … Despite partisan divides willingness cross aisle work bipartisan legislation earned respect legislators sides spectrum allowing forge relationships across divide build consensus where possible pass meaningful laws benefit people country …. Currently serves Chair Committee Energy Natural Resources Ranking Member Armed Services Appropriations Subcommittee Homeland Security currently running reelection 2020 face challenger Paula Jean Swearengin primary contest June 9th 2020
