Janet Louise Yellen (born August 13, 1946) is an American economist and the first female Chair of the Federal Reserve. She served as chair from 2014 to 2018, after serving as Vice Chair since 2010. Prior to that she was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco; Chairman of the White House Council Of Economic Advisers under President Bill Clinton; and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School Of Business.

Early life
Yellen was born in Brooklyn, New York City on August 13th 1946 into a Jewish family who had been living there for generations. Her father taught electrical engineering at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn while her mother worked during World War II as a volunteer military nurse before becoming school librarian when Janet was three years old. Following high school graduation from Fort Hamilton High School in 1963, Yellen studied economics at Brown University where she earned degrees including bachelor’s degree with honors in 1967 and doctorate in 1971 respectively followed by post-doctoral study at Yale university until 1973 when she joined Harvard faculty team till 1976 then moved onto London School Of Economics subsequently moving back to United States taking up position with Board Governor’s staff member within The Federal Reserve System which lasted until 1978 when appointed Professor tenure role based upon Princeton campus grounds only leaving due appointment being accepted by both parties joining The Fed again this time having become part governor seat holder lasting until 1994 prior departing move towards yet another academic posting offered via U C L A campus setting actually commencing October 1994 onwards through July 1997 finally transferring over towards UC Berkeley remaining there till September 1999 thereafter returning once more join F R B San Francisco executive wing led all aspects affecting bank regionally leading operations outlasting term ending June 2006 following promotion made available elevating individual reach Washington D C boardroom level ultimately taking charge number two spot becoming vice headmaster so spoke forth officially announced 26th October 2010 succeeding Ben Bernanke whom stepped down year later just days past February 1st 2014 allowing incoming new leader formally assume control office helm managing overall responsibility top side direction matters concerning independent government agency responsible money supply diverse issues confronting USA economy domestically abroad too stepping away still keeping ongoing focus support global growth policies closely monitored international banking colleagues seeking better co-ordination alignment levels seen felt world wide helping maintain stability financial systems worldwide concluding 4 year watch December 2017 making way Jerome Powell thirteen January 2018 effectively seeing first woman ever occupy prestigious role coming full circle completing remarkable journey began decades earlier showing what sheer hard work dedication determination can achieve regardless gender race background even age proving believe anything possible long dream kept alive perseverance self belief spirit never dies
