Hip hop and rap

Hip hop and rap

Hip hop and rap are both musical genres, which originated in the mid-1970s among African Americans in the United States. Hip hop is a genre of popular music that includes rapping (also known as MCing or emceeing), DJing, sampling, beatboxing and scratching. Rap is generally considered to be a form of hip hop music that uses rhymed lyrics spoken over an instrumental track or beat.

Hip Hop emerged out of inner city youth culture during the late 1970s on the streets of New York City. It was pioneered by DJs such as Afrika Bambaataa who blended funk records with breakbeats from earlier Jamaican dub recordings and sought to create something new from this combination; early influences include James Brown’s ‘Funky Drummer’ sample used by Grandmaster Flash for his 1982 classic ‘The Message’. Other key contributors included The Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Run-DMC and LL Cool J – all helping define what would become mainstream hiphop culture in the 1980s through their ability to merge social commentary into catchy rhymes set against hard hitting beats .

Rap began emerging at around same time but usually featured more complex lyrical structures than traditional hip hop music while also dealing with topics such as politics and current events rather than simply focusing on partying or bragging like much early hiphop did.. Pioneers included Rakim , KRS One , Ice Cube & Public Enemy whilst artists including Nas , Notorious BIG & Eminem further developed rap’s popularity throughout 1990’ s before it became one of world’ s most successful musical genres today .

Many aspects have changed since its inception ; however some things remain constant: strong vocal delivery style emphasizing rhythmically intricate lyricism backed up by sampled drum breaks taken from classic 70’s soul/funk records still characterize both forms today . Furthermore despite many subgenres developing within each form they continue maintain commonalities between them: often being interchangeable terms when referring broadly speaking either type music produced predominantly black American audiences . In conclusion though two distinct styles may exist there no denying impact these two interrelated yet contrasting genres had upon development modern day popular music worldwide
