Gender in sports by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 48 Gender in Sports is the study of how gender affects and influences sports. It examines issues such as access to participation, performance levels, coaching styles, media coverage, awards and salaries. Gender in sports has been an ongoing topic for many years due to changes in society’s expectations of athletes by sex or gender identity. Sports have historically been a male-dominated field but over time women have made significant gains both socially and athletically. The 19th amendment gave women more opportunities to participate on teams at all competitive levels including professional leagues such as the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPSL). This increased female presence led to major developments like Title IX which states that no person can be denied equal access based on their sex or gender when it comes to educational activities including sport programs offered by schools or universities receiving federal funds . Since its implementation there has been tremendous growth in girls’ participation across multiple sports around the world. Despite these advances some disparities still exist between men’s and women’s athletics today primarily concerning funding for teams/athletes along with unequal payouts from sponsorships & prize money; this issue was highlighted during 2018 FIFA World Cup where France won $38 million while USA walked away with only $4 million despite winning second place . Additionally there are also challenges related to resources available for training/coaching staff , facilities used etc., especially within youth development programmes where boys receive better support than girls do even if they perform equally well . Lastly another important factor regarding gender equality is media representation ; studies show that majority of broadcast coverage tend focus mainly on male sporting events giving them greater exposure compared those involving females .. To counter this trend initiatives like #SheBelieves were introduced aimed at increasing visibility & offering meaningful platforms designed specifically catered towards encouraging young females take part physical activity regardless of what level they choose compete.. As we move forward into future it will be key continue working together create new policies ensure fair treatment athletes whilst creating diverse environments everyone can benefit from regardless their background..
