Fumio Kishida

Fumio Kishida (岸田 文雄, born October 26, 1955) is a Japanese politician who has been part of the Liberal Democratic Party since 1996. He was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2014 and held that position until 2017.

Early life and education

Kishida was born on October 26th, 1955 in Hiroshima Prefecture. He graduated from Waseda University with an economics major degree before he passed his bar exam at age 27. Before becoming a full time politician in 1993, he worked as an attorney at law specializing in foreign investments to Japan which included mergers & acquisitions between Japanese companies and their overseas affiliates or partners . During this period he also represented several high-profile cases such as advising Motorola Inc over its acquisition of Matsushita’s mobile phone business unit Kyocera Telecom Co Ltd.

Political career

In December of 1994, Kishida joined the newly established New Frontier Party. However, he left the party two years later and joined the Liberal Democratic Party, where he began working under Shinzo Abe during Abe’s first term as Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007. In 2008, Kishida ran unsuccessfully against former Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki for the secretary-general post within the LDP. However, during the 2009 election cycle, Kishida won the Saitama 5th district seat, defeating incumbent Jiro Kawasaki. He was then elected three times consecutively from the same electoral district. Kishida won the special elections for the House of Councillors Tokyo PR constituency 2nd block, covering the 23 wards of the Tokyo metropolitan area, as well as representing the entire prefecture nearby Ibaraki.

It is worth noting that despite the odds stacked against him due to strong opposition party support within the capital region, Kishida emerged victorious after running an energetic campaign targeting young voters through aggressive use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. His political prowess earned him numerous ministerial positions, including Civil Service Reform Minister from 2010 to 2012, followed by National Strategy Bureau chief from 2013 to 2014, ultimately culminating in his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister, replacing popular diplomat Fumie Kumagai towards the end of 2014.

According to 2015 reports based on a survey conducted among various ministries and agencies involved in international diplomacy efforts, higher satisfaction levels were achieved compared to the previous year, citing improved coordination amongst different stakeholders coupled with efficient decision-making processes implemented under new leadership. During the 2016 election cycle, there were rumors of a possible reshuffle leading up to the Prime Minister’s cabinet, yet no changes happened until March 2017 when Kishida replaced Taro Kono, whose tenure ended abruptly without giving any specific reasons. This allowed for a smooth transition process, enabling both men to continue serving their respective departments even today.

Upon leaving office on April 24th, 2018, which coincided with the 100th anniversary foundation day of the Japan Diplomatic Service, Mr. Kishida expressed deep gratitude to all staff members who had served tirelessly while acknowledging the challenges faced in trying situations, especially the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunamis triggered by the March 11th, 2011 events. Since then, apart from actively engaging in NGOs focused on environment-related issues through activities such as planting trees, participating in charity campaigns, and raising awareness about global warming concerns, we have seen frequent public appearances where Kishida addresses local gatherings, advocating the need for a greater focus to be placed on developing infrastructure planning, particularly focusing on the welfare of senior citizens living in rural areas, helping them access better medical facilities and other amenities needed to sustain decent living standards.

Looking back, one can easily conclude how Mr. Fumiya Kishida rose through the ranks to become an influential figure in domestic politics, playing an important role in shaping the country’s future course and writing eventful chapters along the way.

Following his departure from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kishida took on a more active role in the Liberal Democratic Party. In 2018, he announced his candidacy for the party leadership election, where he competed against several other high-profile candidates, including former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba and former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Hiroya Masuda.

In the end, Kishida emerged victorious, becoming the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party and succeeding Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He was subsequently appointed as the 100th Prime Minister of Japan on October 4, 2021, after winning the general election that year.

As Prime Minister, Kishida has prioritized the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery, environmental sustainability, and social welfare. In his first policy speech as Prime Minister, he pledged to accelerate Japan’s shift to renewable energy and to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Kishida has also sought to improve Japan’s diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, including China and South Korea. He has expressed his intention to meet with the leaders of both countries to discuss the ongoing territorial disputes and historical issues that have strained their relationships.

Despite his efforts, Kishida’s tenure as Prime Minister has been marked by a number of challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s demographic crisis, and the growing threat of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. However, Kishida has remained committed to addressing these issues and to ensuring that Japan remains a stable and prosperous country in the years to come.
