“Exploring the Devastating Consequences of Russia’s Attack on Ukraine: Homes and Lives Lost”

Russia has increased their missile and drone attacks against Ukraine on Wednesday, which have caused the deaths of students and other people. This violent attack is a result of attempts to make peace after almost one year of war.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a video online that showed Russian missiles bombing and destroying an apartment building in the city of Zaporizhzhia. He described this attack as “bestial savagery” because ordinary people and children were in the area being attacked.

Someone died at the attack shown in a video from Zaporizhzhia, which was recorded by security cameras. In addition, Moscow’s troops used drones to launch bombs before sunrise and eight people around a student dormitory close to Kyiv were killed. China and Russia have had a long complicated friendship. Slovakia provided America with helicopters in exchange for jets being shipped to Ukraine. Finally, Ukraine and IMF (International Monetary Fund) agreed on a loan package worth $15.6 billion USD.

Pictures and videos from Ukrainian media showed the destruction of an apartment building near a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia. The attack sent grey and black smoke billowing into the sky, with pieces of concrete flying around. The aftermath was severe; charred apartments covered by flames and smoke, broken glass and concrete on the ground. Two children were wounded as well as 25 adults who required hospital treatment overall, three severely injured.

Zaporizhzhia city is located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) away from the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is the biggest one in Europe. This power plant was closed for a few months because of a war but just recently has gotten into trouble again as it lost a type of electricity supply. It needs to have at least one kind of electricity in order to cool down its six reactors. On Wednesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported that there’s currently only one type of electricity running through the plant.

Russia said it has not purposefully tried to hurt civilians by shooting missiles or artillery at buildings and other parts of civilian life. However, Russia claims that Ukraine put people in danger by setting up defense systems nearby residential areas. Sometimes, Russia says Ukraine might be hiding soldiers or weapons in homes as well.

Russia started a war on February 24, 2022 and it is still going on. There are two main parts of the war – one taking place in eastern Ukraine around Bakhmut city and the other one is when Russia launches bombs and drones to attack other areas of Ukraine. In addition, Ukraine sometimes attacks Russia too. The fighting between them hasn’t changed much over winter but it could become more intense when spring arrives.

On Wednesday, a drone attack damaged a high school and two dormitories in Rzhyshchiv, which is near the capital of Ukraine. It’s unclear how many people were inside the dorms when it happened. The police found the body of a 40-year-old man in one of the floors and more than 20 people had to go to the hospital. Video showed a bloody sneaker and a green ball on the ground next to a building that had its top corner ripped off.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida from Japan recently visited Kyiv and talked with President Zelenskyy in an effort to support Ukraine. Similarly, Chinese leader Xi Jinping travelled to Moscow to present a peace plan to Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, this proposal was rejected by the Western nations, so no progress towards peace has been made.

The US National Security Council spokeswoman, Adrienne Watson, said that Russia’s actions were terrible. She talked from Washington and mentioned that it was only one day after Russia asked for peace and now it is attacking Ukrainian homes as part of a war. The US will continue to help Ukraine protect itself from Russian attacks. This kind of attack also angered the Zelenskyy leader.

Someone tweeted that last night in Russia, over 20 killer drones were sent out, and lots of missiles were fired. They did this because when someone tried to talk about peace there, the people in charge sent out criminal strikes instead.

The regional administration said two missiles even hit an apartment building, with the hope of scaring all the people who live there.

A Ukrainian member of parliament Oleksiy Goncharenko recently said on Telegram that a town called Zaporizhzhia is in bad shape as there aren’t any military bases close to it. Meanwhile, a person from the Moscow-appointed government for the area of Zaporizhzhia mentioned that a missile launched by Ukraine may have hit an apartment building, however he didn’t provide any evidence.

Ukraine’s air defense forces managed to shoot down 16 out of the 21 drones launched by Russia. Eight drones were shot down close to Kyiv (the capital of Ukraine) while some others hit Khmelnytskyi (a province in west-central Ukraine).

On Wednesday, Zelenskyy went to visit soldiers in Donetsk and stopped by a hospital to give wounded ones state awards. Bakhmut, the city that has suffered the most fighting in this war and where resistance against Russia’s encirclement is strongest, was one of the places he visited. He had previously last been there in December. Afterwards, he went to Kharkiv which his forces had retaken from Russia back last September.

Something else has happened.

The Russian military fought off an attack by drones on the main harbor in Sevastopol, a city that is home to a headquarters for its navy. No one was hurt during this incident but there were some damages done to some buildings near the harbor when the drones exploded. The blasts broke the windows of these buildings and no one has taken responsibility for attacking soon afterward.

Yesterday night in Odesa, Ukraine, three people were hurt when they were hit by missiles that were launched from Russia. The President of Ukraine’s office said that two of the four missiles were stopped and didn’t reach their targets.

Dmitry Medvedev, who works with Putin to help Russia stay secure, was asked a question on his messaging app about whether the chance of a nuclear disaster was getting less or more. He replied that it wasn’t getting better – in fact, it’s getting worse. Those people helping Ukraine by giving them weapons are taking us closer to an apocalypse caused by nuclear power every day.

Ukraine’s Finance Ministry got a $15.6 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund to help repair their country’s economy, which was damaged by an invasion. Ukrainian leaders are hoping that this loan will inspire other people to lend them money too.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, said that her agency has put in a lot of effort to stop Russia from keeping their military strong by using 2,500 special sanctions. This has made it much harder for them to replace over 9,000 pieces of big military equipment that they have lost in battles.
