Floods by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 62 Floods are a natural phenomenon of overflowing water from rivers, lakes and oceans onto land that is normally dry. It typically occurs when large amounts of rainfall occur over short periods of time or if there is a rapid melting of snow in mountainous regions. Flooding can also be caused by the failure of levees, dams or other structures designed to control the flow or accumulation of water on land. In addition, floods may result from tsunamis, storm surges resulting from tropical cyclones and high tides due to strong winds pushing ocean waters inland. The effects caused by flooding ranges greatly depending on where it takes place as well as its magnitude. Structures such as homes and buildings can be destroyed while crops are ruined through drowning in floodwaters; leading to loss in property value for many people living near bodies of water susceptible to flooding. Additionally, livestock losses often occur due to lack food sources after their pastures have been submerged underwater along with various diseases being spread throughout communities via contaminated drinking-water supplies which further adds suffering among those affected by the floods . Moreover , infrastructure systems like roads , bridges , railways etc suffer great damage during this process making it difficult for relief efforts teams reach areas cut off due to these damages . The best form prevention against floods involves using engineering solutions such as building levees/dams (managing river course) , urban planning (avoiding development in hazardous locations ) and careful monitoring & management practices . Other methods include more traditional approaches like planting trees around waterways help absorb excess rainwater before they enter into major streams /rivers thereby reducing chances heavy runoff occurring downstream ; creating buffer zones between vulnerable settlements & nearby rivers ;and educating public about how recognize potential dangers posed environmental conditions associated with higher precipitation levels so appropriate steps taken even before flood warnings issued out .
