District of Columbia

The District of Columbia (D.C.), officially the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, D.C., is a federal district located on the east coast of the United States along with Maryland and Virginia. The city was founded in 1791 to serve as the nation’s capital; it is governed by an independent mayor-council government, known locally as “the Mayoralty”. Its population was 601,723 according to estimates from July 2019, making it the second most populous district behind New York City.

Geographically situated between Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River estuary near Chesapeake Bay, D.C.’s landscape includes numerous historic monuments dedicated to presidents such as George Washington (Washington Monument) and Thomas Jefferson (Jefferson Memorial).
