Brazil by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 89 Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is a country in South America. It is bordered by Colombia to its north; Venezuela, Guyana and French Guiana to its northeast; Suriname to its east; Bolivia and Peru to its south-east; Argentina and Paraguay to its south; and Uruguay on the Atlantic Ocean coast at southeast corner. With an estimated population of 208 million people as of 2018, it is the fifth most populous nation in the world, while also being considered one of 17 megadiverse countries due largely to extensive wildlife found within Amazon rainforest region that covers nearly 60% of Brazilian landmass. Its capital city is Brasília with São Paulo serving as largest metropolitan area both in terms of size and population. Over centuries Portuguese colonizers developed what would become modern-day Brazil from sparsely populated Native American tribes until declaring independence from Portugal on September 7th 1822 – making it oldest country in Latin America along with Haiti established shortly afterwards. Following turbulent 19th century marked with numerous civil wars following economic decline after abolishment slave trade – slavery was only fully abolished in 1888 when monarchy was overthrown ending era known as Old Republic which saw first democratic constitution written into effect during 1946 ushering new era lasting till present day where constant efforts are made towards improving economy & social systems among other things such as education system now mandatory for children 6–14 years old according law passed 2002 respectively called “Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional” or LDBEN translated English meaning National Education Guidelines Act . Today Brazil enjoys large diversified economy ranging primary sectors including agricultural production soybeans corn sugarcane coffee oranges cocoa beans etc through industrial manufacturing vehicles aircraft ships electronics appliances textiles chemicals processed foods beverages pharmaceuticals petrochemicals steel aluminum etc lastly services tourism transportation financial IT retail hospitality healthcare media banking telecommunications recreation entertainment etc all contributing significantly GDP growth rate around 2 % annually since turn millennium despite recent recession periods experienced throughout 2010s decade thus far leaving much room potential development future times ahead not least because fact already ranks 8th largest global exporter 5th importer worldwide market share 2017 World Trade Organization report indicating positive signs foreseeable outlook even considering current difficulties faced amidst international context today .
