It was founded in 1729 when it became a seaport town with a thriving shipbuilding industry. By 1830 Baltimore had become one of America’s most important cities due to its busy port activities, becoming known as “The Monumental City”. The city has grown over time into an urban center for business and finance, government services, culture and education. Today Baltimore retains much of its historic buildings including Fort McHenry which dates back to 1803 and where Francis Scott Key wrote his famous poem that would later become the national anthem of the United States – The Star Spangled Banner. Other attractions include Historic Ships In Baltimore harbor; Lexington Market (the oldest continually running market in US); National Aquarium; Inner Harbor Promenade; Port Discovery Children’s Museum; Washington Monument & Mount Vernon Place neighborhood along with numerous art galleries, theaters and other cultural centers throughout downtown area.
