Four Individuals Injured in Shooting at Morgan State University, Confirm Authorities

A minimum of four individuals sustained injuries in a gunfire incident that unfolded at Morgan State University in Baltimore this past Tuesday, state officials. While none of the injuries are deemed critical, authorities have advised students to seek refuge within the confines of the campus, which is a historically Black educational institution.

Initially, the Baltimore Police Department categorized the incident as an “active shooter situation.” They maintained a lockdown on the campus for an extended period but divulged scant details regarding their ongoing inquiry. The location of the shooting seems to correspond to a residential complex situated on the same block as a municipal police station.

Authorities relayed safety instructions via X, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Roughly three hours following the initial announcement, the police clarified that the situation was no longer categorized as an active shooting and indicated that additional information would be disseminated during an upcoming media briefing.

Spokesperson for the police, Amanda Krotki, confirmed multiple individuals had sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. Another police spokesperson, Vernon Davis, informed the Baltimore Banner that at least four people had been shot.

City Council member Ryan Dorsey revealed on X that preliminary information suggests the involvement of three shooters who fired into the crowd. As of the report, no individuals have been taken into custody.

On Tuesday evening, law enforcement officials secured the southern entrance of the campus near the dormitories while a police helicopter surveyed the area from above.

The incident occurred during a week slated for various events leading up to the university’s homecoming game on Saturday. One such event, the coronation of Mister & Miss Morgan State, was scheduled for Tuesday night at the Murphy Fine Arts Center—a location the school warned people to steer clear of.

Glenmore Blackwood rushed to the campus after his son, a senior student, informed him that the shooting took place as the coronation ceremony was drawing to a close. His son had participated in the event and had plans to conduct a prayer service afterward.

Blackwood expressed his distress over the incident. “It’s unfortunate. The event was designed to cultivate a positive atmosphere, and yet this tragedy transpired,” he said.

Ish Sargent, a 20-year-old resident of the area, mentioned that she and her friends ventured outdoors upon hearing the helicopter, although they did not hear the gunshots. “It’s unsettling to think that such violence could occur at a school,” she noted.

Founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute with an original mandate to train men for ministry, Morgan State University currently enrolls approximately 9,000 students. It relocated to its present location in northeast Baltimore in 1917 and was acquired by the state of Maryland in 1939, as part of an initiative to expand educational opportunities for Black citizens.

City Council member Odette Ramos, whose jurisdiction partially includes the Morgan State campus, described the incident as a severe blow both to the institution and the city at large. “This is an extraordinarily distressing situation for all parties involved,” she said.
