Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field of study that focuses on creating machines capable of performing tasks which typically require human-level or higher cognitive capabilities. These tasks include problem solving, natural language processing, vision recognition, and learning. AI has become an essential part of modern life as it allows for automation in many areas such as healthcare diagnostics, financial services transactions and online search engines. The development of AI began with the first computers in 1950s but has grown exponentially since then due to advances in technology and computing power.

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined by John McCarthy at the Dartmouth Conference held in 1956 where he defined it as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines”. Over time this definition evolved to encompass various subfields including robotics: using sensors to detect objects; machine learning: algorithms that make decisions based on data; deep learning: neural networks used for pattern recognition; computer vision: analyzing images from cameras; natural language processing: understanding spoken words or written text;; planning & scheduling agents working within dynamic environments; decision support systems able handle large amounts complex data efficiently ;and finally expert systems considered giants among its peers because they are programmed with knowledge bases related specific domains like medicine or law so they can offer advice a real person would give under similar circumstances .
