Arizona State Sun Devils

The Arizona State Sun Devils (also known as ASU or A-State) is the name of the athletic teams that represent Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. The school’s sports teams are members of NCAA Division I and compete in the Pac-12 Conference.

Arizona State first adopted its “Sun Devil” nickname for its football team when it was established in 1893 with a $25 donation from an enthusiastic fan, who had been inspired by Walter Camp’s description of Princeton’s aggressive play as “devils.” In 1946, then Athletic Director Grady Gammage commissioned Phoenix graphic artist John Brockington to create a mascot based on his vision. Sparky soon became an integral part of university spirit at sporting events and continues to be used today both officially and unofficially across all varsity sports programs at ASU.

In addition to having one of the most recognizable mascots in college athletics, the Sun Devils have earned numerous accolades throughout their history including four NCAA National Championships (one men’s golf championship; two women’s outdoor track & field championships; one baseball championship). They also boast over 200 individual national champions – more than any other program outside California – along with several conference titles across multiple sports divisions. Additionally, some notable alumni include NFL Hall Of Famer Randall McDaniel; MLB All Star Reggie Jackson; NBA MVP James Harden; Olympic Gold Medalists Amy Van Dyken-Rouen and Jake Rienhardt among others.

The Sun Devils’ official colors are maroon and gold which can be seen prominently displayed around campus during gamedays or special occasions such as commencement ceremonies where graduates wear ceremonial robes featuring those same hues too signify their academic achievements while representing ASU proudly into new chapters ahead!
