Alabama is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama’s capital city is Montgomery, and its largest city is Birmingham. The population of Alabama was estimated at 4,903,185 as of 2020.

The history of human settlement in what would become modern-day Alabama dates back thousands of years before European contact. Native American tribes such as Creek and Cherokee inhabited this area for centuries prior to European exploration beginning in 1540 with Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto’s expeditions into present day South Carolina and Georgia.
