The latest incident in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war involved Ukrainian sea drones launching an attack on a major Russian port on the Black Sea, causing damage to a naval ship. The attack targeted Novorossiysk, a significant port hosting a naval base, shipbuilding yards, and an oil terminal crucial for exports. This marks the first time a commercial Russian port has been attacked in the 18-month-long conflict.

The Security Service of Ukraine, along with the country’s navy, carried out the strike on Novorossiysk. The naval ship, Olenegorsky Gornyak, suffered severe damage, rendering it unable to carry out its combat missions. Russia claimed it repelled the attack, stating that ships patrolling the naval base perimeter destroyed two sea drones. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium confirmed that its facilities were not damaged, but maritime traffic was halted for a few hours. There were no reported casualties.

The Black Sea has become a critical battleground since Russia withdrew from a deal allowing Ukrainian grain shipments through the sea. Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s ports, exacerbating the impact on food markets worldwide. Recently, Russian drones caused significant damage and a massive fire at facilities in the Odesa region vital for Ukrainian grain exports.

In previous incidents, drones struck a building in Moscow and harmlessly hit the Kremlin. The conflict has escalated in the region, with both sides engaging in attacks and counterattacks.

The war has seen symbolic blows, such as Ukraine claiming to have successfully sunk Russia’s flagship Black Sea fleet vessel, the Moskva. Russia denied this attack, attributing the ship’s sinking to a fire and storm damage.

Following the attack on Novorossiysk, Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported repelling another attack on Crimea by Ukraine, downing 10 drones and electronically jamming three others.
