Authorities in Israel have detained an American tourist at Jerusalem’s Israel Museum for causing destruction to artworks, specifically targeting two Roman statues dating back to the second century.

The incident, which took place late on Thursday, has elicited concerns about the security of invaluable art collections in Israel and reignited debates over the increasing incidents of cultural heritage being compromised in Jerusalem.

The individual in question has been identified by law enforcement as a 40-year-old Jewish American with extremist views. Preliminary interrogations indicate that the man vandalized the statues under the belief that they were “idolatrous and in violation of Jewish law.”

Nick Kaufman, the legal representative for the accused, refuted claims that his client was motivated by religious extremism. Instead, he posited that the man is affected by a mental condition known as the Jerusalem syndrome, a psychological disorientation thought to be triggered by the city’s religious significance, affecting visitors of diverse faiths. This condition reportedly leads affected individuals to conceive of themselves as biblical figures.

Following a court order, the accused is to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. His identity remains undisclosed in compliance with a judicial gag order.

During this period of heightened religious fervor, coinciding with the Jewish holiday season, there has been a noticeable uptick in aggressive behavior towards Christian worshippers, primarily by radical segments of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. This has resulted in not only distress among tourists but also widespread condemnation and angst among local Christian communities. The Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot concludes this Friday at dusk.

The esteemed Israel Museum, known for its comprehensive exhibits covering archaeology, fine arts, and Judaic culture and history, termed the recent act of vandalism as a “disturbing and uncommon occurrence.” The museum expressed its condemnation of all violent actions and expressed hope for the prevention of such incidents in the future.

Images released by the museum reveal the marble head of the goddess Athena displaced from its pedestal, and another statue of a pagan deity shattered into pieces. Although the museum is in the process of restoring the damaged items, it declined to disclose their financial worth or the cost of the restorations.

Israeli governmental authorities have also voiced their concerns regarding the incident, attributing it to a form of Jewish iconoclasm that adheres to ancient prohibitions against idol worship.

Eli Escusido, the director of the Israel Antiquities Authority, remarked, “This is an appalling instance of the annihilation of cultural values. It is disconcerting to witness cultural assets being eradicated by individuals motivated by religious extremism.”

This act of vandalism adds to a growing list of attacks perpetrated by Jewish individuals against historical and cultural sites in Jerusalem. Earlier this year, another Jewish American tourist defaced a statue of Jesus at a Christian site in the Old City, and there was an instance where Jewish teenagers vandalized historical Christian tombstones at a significant cemetery in Jerusalem.

Despite the incident, the Israel Museum resumed its operations to the public at its usual opening time on Friday morning, approximately 16 hours following the act of vandalism.
