On Wednesday, Toyota communicated its decision to recall close to 1.9 million RAV4 compact SUVs in the United States. This move is to address a battery concern where the battery could shift during aggressive turns, presenting a potential fire hazard.

The recall is focused on specific RAV4 units manufactured between 2013 and 2018. In its official statement, Toyota elucidated that certain replacement 12-volt batteries installed in these SUVs may possess top dimensions that are smaller compared to other variants. In situations where the hold-down clamp isn’t secured adequately, there’s a risk for the battery to shift. This displacement might enable the positive battery terminal to come into contact with the clamp, leading to a short circuit, as per the company’s explanation.

The automaker indicated that they are in the process of devising a solution. Once a corrective action is finalized, dealerships will be directed to replace the current hold-down clamp, battery tray, and the cover for the positive terminal with enhanced versions. Toyota anticipates notifying all affected vehicle owners by the end of December.

The company chose not to disclose if this particular issue has been the reason for any fires, accidents, or injuries.
