Sunday Night Showdown: Oscars vs. The Last of Us – Which Will You Watch?

This Sunday, we will finally see if Joel and Ellie reach the doctors in “The Last of Us” and if Michelle Yeoh wins Best Actress at the Oscars. However, you might have to pick one event over another because there is a clash: The season finale of the HBO show will be aired at the same time as when the Academy Awards are happening live on ABC. Keep an eye out for other details about Oscar night today like this one – for the first time since 1961, there won’t be a red carpet at the ceremony!

– Bruce Lee and Anna May Wong’s relatives are talking about keeping their legacies alive and offering more roles to Asians.

– At the Oscars one year later, The Slap was still featured in the show.

You can watch both the Oscars and “The Last of Us” if you want! The Oscars start at 8 PM, but “The Last of Us” doesn’t begin until 9 PM. If you choose to watch the first hour of the Oscars, then you can switch to “The Last of Us”, but this has a downside – you could miss some important moments in the ceremony. But if you decide to stick with just the Oscars, there’s still a risk that you will be spoiled on what happens in “The Last of Us”.

Robert Thompson, a professor at Syracuse University and director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture explains that the debate is largely about what people think.

“When you watch TV it’s not just about watching shows. It’s also about sharing your opinion with others,” Thompson said. “Lots of people will probably have something to say after watching ‘The Last of Us’, whether it be expressing their own views or discussing with other viewers.”

Thompson explained that the Oscars has a lot to lose if it competes with a zombie video game adaptation with a post-apocalyptic, mushroom infection theme.

The telecast last year was watched by around 15.36 million people, which is better than the 9.85 million who had tuned in to watch during 2021. The Oscars have money on the line from advertisements, but a cable channel like HBO doesn’t need to worry about that (although its show “The Last of Us” got 8.1 million viewers for just one episode).

Thompson explained that watching the Oscars live is important, because it will give them a higher rating. If people choose to watch ‘The Last of Us’ instead, then this could lower the ratings for the Oscars. However, there are plenty of other opportunities to watch ‘The Last of Us’, while watching the Oscars live only has one chance.

HBO wanted to make sure a lot of people would watch their show, The Last of Us, so they chose to release the fifth episode early before the Super Bowl game. This special game was between two teams (The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs), and it ended with the Chiefs winning. The Super Bowl was so popular that 113.1 million people watched it, making it one of the most-watched shows in history!

The network didn’t explain why they made this decision to keep the Sunday evening schedule, so everyone will have to wait and see. Also, actor Pascal from The Last of Us will be presenting at the Academy Awards that same evening! So on Sunday night, you’ll have two choices – watch Pascal on either ABC or HBO.
