The Russian armed forces have confirmed the successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, designed for nuclear armament deployment, from the recently constructed nuclear-powered submarine.

Amid escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations due to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, this launch coincides with heightened concerns. In a recent development that exacerbates these strains, President Vladimir Putin has endorsed legislation withdrawing Russia from an international nuclear test ban treaty, a move Russia justifies as a step towards balancing the strategic equation with the United States.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the strategic missile cruiser named Imperator Alexander III executed the Bulava missile’s underwater launch in the White Sea located in the northern part of Russia, successfully striking a designated target on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The precise timing of the missile’s launch was not specified in the ministry’s announcement.

The Imperator Alexander III submarine is part of the advanced Borei-class fleet, each equipped with 16 Bulava missiles. These submarines are anticipated to become the primary maritime segment of Russia’s nuclear defense for the foreseeable future. The Defense Ministry notes that this missile launch represents the vessel’s ultimate trial before the navy can decide on its formal commissioning into service.

Presently, the Russian naval force includes three operational Borei-class submarines, with an additional one undergoing testing, and a further three are in various stages of construction, as per the Defense Ministry’s statement.
