On Tuesday, parts of the northeast experienced a winter storm with heavy wet snow. This storm spread across New England, upstate New York, northeastern Pennsylvania, and northern New Jersey. The amount of snow in these areas can be anywhere from a few inches to several feet when all is said and done. Because of this many schools were closed and flights canceled, although some places did suffer power outages as well.

Gov. Ned Lamont of Connecticut announced that this winter storm could be quite different. He stated that some towns may get a lot of snow, while other places may only get a little or even just rain. That’s why he decided to close state offices for safety reasons.

The airport in Albany, New York had to start clearing snow on Monday night and it continued until Tuesday morning. Some flights were canceled due to the condition of the airport. Bradley International Airport in Connecticut stayed open despite the snowfall and about 15% of their flights ended up being canceled as well. According to the National Weather Service, it was snowing heavily in some higher elevation areas like the Catskills, mid-Hudson Valley and Berkshires with 2 inches (5 cm.) falling each hour or more.

In New Hampshire there was supposed to be an election for town officeholders, but lots of bad weather caused problems. It was raining and also getting colder, so some snow started falling and the wind got stronger. Patrick Moody from AAA New England said these bad driving conditions meant that 70 towns had to cancel the election because it wasn’t safe to drive.

The weather service said it’s expected that snow will fall in Massachusetts, with some areas getting up to a foot and a half of snow, while other places like Boston would only get between four to six inches. In southwest New Hampshire, the amount of snow might even go up to two feet, and Augusta in Maine might see eight inches or more. The storm should be ending by Wednesday.

The Northeast had a bad storm which happened at the same time California suffered through some tough weather too. Workers were in a hurry to mend the broken levee of a flooded river found in the middle part of California. This week, yet another big rain is headed to California and it could make things more difficult for farmers living there and their crops.
