After pitching a perfect ninth inning to finish off the 5-2 game, he was taken off the field in a wheelchair. The Mets announced later that Díaz needs tests to find out how serious his injury is. The Puerto Rican Players were celebrating in the infield when Edwin Díaz suddenly collapsed and grabbed his right leg. He was crying and couldn’t move it. His brother, Alexis Díaz, cried as he was taken away. Mets team mate Francisco Lindor was standing nearby looking shocked. Christian Vázquez hit a home run in the third inning and Puerto Rico won the game, which means they are now playing in on Saturday at Miami in the quarterfinals of the WBC. This is only the second time that Dominican Republic has not made it past their first round since 2009. After Vázquez’s homer, four people (Vimael Machin, Martin Maldonado, Francisco Lindor and Kiké Hernandez) got singles in a row which meant Puerto Rico now had three points. Then MJ Melendez helped Lindor to score one more point which made Puerto Rico’s lead even greater. Cueto was taken out of the game before it ended as he gave up four hits, three runs, and struck out two batters. Juan Soto then launched an impressive 448-foot home run to deep center field off of a Puerto Rico reliever, making the score 4-1. Soto had an incredible tournament, obtaining 6 hits in 15 at bats and earning 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico had a spectacular pool round, shutting out Israel 10-0 on Monday night. Lastly, Cuba managed to beat Australia with a score of 4-3. Cuba just had a long flight from Tokyo to Miami and are about to compete in the World Baseball Classic semifinals for the first time since 2006. During their quarterfinal game, Alfredo Despaigne hit a fly ball which gave them the lead and Yoelkis Guibert followed up with a two-run single that helped them win in the fifth inning. In Sunday’s match, Cuba will be playing against either Venezuela, Canada, Colombia, Mexico or America – they all competed in Group C of this tournament. Rixon Wingrove, who used to play for the Phillies, helped Australia in a big way by getting 7 RBIs. In the second round of the tournament, he hit a special single which put Australia ahead and then hit another two-run homer off of Chicago Cubs player Roenis Elías. Later on in the sixth inning, Alex Hall from the Milwaukee Brewers almost got a home run but settled with a flyout instead. Elías threw a perfect inning during the seventh, and Liván Moinelo was able to get two walks out of the way by striking out Ulrich Bojarski and making Tim Kennelly fly-out in the eighth. To seal the win, Raidel Martinez pitched an amazing 1-2-3 ninth inning, with Darryl George being struck out on the 8th pitch of their at-bat. In front of 35,061 fans at Tokyo Dome, Luis Robert tied up the score for Cuba with a groundout that scored one run in the third inning. Cuba, who lost the 2006 final to Japan, didn’t make it past the second round in the WBCs for the last three times. Their luck changed this tournament though, as they won their third straight game despite losing their first two. For the first time in history Australia made it past the group stage. Yoán Moncada from the Chicago White Sox had a great performance – two hits, two walks and a .421 batting average with five runs batted in (RBIs). He was responsible for jump-starting their offense during the third inning after drawing a walk from Mitch Neunborn, followed by Roel Santos making one single hit. Miguel Romero was the winner of the game, and he didn’t give up any hits in his time playing. Yoenis Céspedes decided to leave the team before the match without giving a reason why. Randy Arozarena had two doubles and five runs batted in (RBIs), while Rowdy Tellez had a single and homer run that scored two Runs, which helped Mexico beat Canada by 10-3. This win got Mexico into the quarterfinals! Mexico had a tough start to their tournament, after their loss in the Group C match at “Chase Field” against Colombia. But things began to look better for them when they won the following three games against the U.S., Britain and Canada. José Urquidy did an amazing job by giving away only two runs in four innings and striking out five batters – earning his team the win. The victory was sealed by Arozarena’s triple hit that resulted in six scores for Mexico. This gave them a 6-2 lead over all the other teams, resulting in Arozarena being named AL Rookie of the Year for 2021! In Canada’s game, the leadoff hitter Edouard Julien got two hits and one score. Catcher Bo Naylor also managed to hit a home run by himself. Rob Zastryzny was responsible for giving up three scores to the other team which caused Canada to lose the match. Unfortunately, Los Angeles Dodgers star first baseman Freddie Freeman had to leave early because he suffered from a hamstring injury. Venezuela won 5-1 against Israel in this event. Eugenio Suárez had a great game, hitting one home run and two singles while getting three runs batted in. Meanwhile, pitcher Jesús Luzardo did an amazing job throwing by striking out five players. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Eduardo Escobar also contributed to their team’s victory with two singles and one home run respectivley. Venezuela was victorious with ten hits all together! And for winning this particular game, Venezuela has officially secured a spot in the Quarterfinal round of tournaments. At the start of the tournament, Venezuela quickly built a 3-run lead over Robert Stock. Acuña got an RBI single and Suárez hit a two-run single. Escobar then made it 4-0 with a solo shot in the fourth inning and Suárez added another one with a leadoff drive in the sixth. Jakob Goldfarb followed that up by bringing in 1 run during the seventh inning, which ended Israel’s 22-inning scoreless streak. With this victory, Venezuela became one of only two undefeated group winners along with Japan. Israel did not end up winning the 2017 tournament. They ended with a score of 1-3 after they had already made it to the second round.
