Hassan Hussain, a first-time 24-year-old pilgrim from Britain, adopts a maximalist approach. His bag contains his phone, charging cable, power bank, sunglasses, water bottle, British and Saudi currency, bank cards, shoe bag, prayer mat, and hydrating facial mist. He followed the advice of his sister, who completed the Hajj last year, recommending other pilgrims to pack generously.

“You never know when you might need something,” he advises. “The person next to you might also require assistance. Carry everything and adjust accordingly as you go along.”

On the other hand, Ali Ibn Mousa, a 30-year-old Russian father of seven, prioritizes mobility and speed, opting for a lighter load. His drawstring bag carries only his phone and pilgrim ID. His focus lies in acquiring mementos during the Hajj, and he humorously mentions his interest in finding a second wife alongside his spiritual journey. Ali explains that a smaller bag allows him to maneuver quickly, ensuring he can swiftly complete the Kaaba circumambulation.

CAMPOUT CHECKLIST

The immense throngs of pilgrims traverse more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) across holy sites ranging from the Grand Mosque to the Mount of Mercy (Mount Arafat) in the desert. Even within a single ritual location, it may take a significant portion of the day to walk from one end to the other. Mina, where pilgrims reside in one of the world’s largest tent camps and perform the symbolic stoning of the devil, exemplifies this.

Pilgrims must be prepared to wait in outdoor locations for prolonged periods, sometimes during the night, until transportation arrives or crowds disperse.

Ikram Mohammed, who owns a supermarket in Mecca, offers various camping essentials such as lightweight tents, sleeping mats, and collapsible water pouches.

He shares, “Pilgrims purchase dried fruit, nuts, biscuits, and chips—foods that are easy to consume on the move, requiring no refrigeration or utensils.” The store even dedicates a section to fragrance-free toiletries to comply with the prohibition on perfume.

In addition to these items, Mohammed sells souvenirs for pilgrims to take home, including chocolates, sweets, and water sourced from the sacred Zamzam well near the Kaaba.

Another sought-after product is pain relief cream for soothing achy joints.
