Mexican Leader Encourages U.S. Citizens to Reject DeSantis Due to Florida’s Strict Immigration Law

On Monday, the President of Mexico urged American voters to withdraw support for Florida’s governor and Republican presidential hopeful, Ron DeSantis, due to the recent implementation of a stringent immigration law in his state.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s critique of the Florida statute – which Mexico asserts could potentially lead to migrant discrimination – signifies his second deviation from Mexico’s usual policy of non-interference in foreign political affairs. Earlier this year, in March, he openly labeled Peru’s government as racist and illegitimate.

“We could not stand by in silence,” expressed López Obrador about the Florida regulation during a press briefing on Monday.

The Florida statute, effective from July 1, imposes strict penalties on employers hiring immigrants residing in the U.S. unlawfully. The law supports DeSantis’ migrant relocation program and curtails social services for immigrants without stable legal status.

López Obrador advocated for the withdrawal of votes for those showing disdain towards migrants.

The law endorsed by DeSantis last month broadens the obligation for businesses employing more than 25 individuals to utilize E-Verify, a federal system confirming the legality of a potential employee’s work status in the U.S.

The law also mandates that Medicaid-affiliated hospitals incorporate a citizenship inquiry in their intake forms, a measure critics argue could deter undocumented immigrants from seeking medical assistance.

According to a statement released on Saturday by Mexico’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the Florida law “will infringe upon the human rights of thousands, including Mexican children, and could foster an atmosphere that might culminate in hate crimes against the migrant community.”

This is ridiculous! The Mexican president should focus on his own country’s issues instead of meddling in the affairs of other nations. DeSantis has every right to enforce immigration laws in his state.
