The young boy was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The mother, who had sustained multiple stab wounds, is expected to make a recovery. Post-mortem examination of the child revealed that he had been stabbed numerous times.

According to a statement from the Will County Sheriff’s Office, “Investigations revealed that the suspect targeted both victims based on their Muslim identity and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving Hamas and Israel.”

The assaulted woman had called 911 to report that her landlord attacked her with a knife. She subsequently retreated to a bathroom, where she continued to fend off the assailant. Joseph M. Czuba, 71, of Plainfield, was apprehended near the residence. He faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of hate crimes, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His initial hearing is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Efforts to contact Czuba or his family were unavailing; no immediate responses were received from messages left for potential relatives or legal representatives.

The names of the victims have been withheld by authorities. However, the boy’s paternal uncle, Yousef Hannon, spoke at a news conference hosted by the Chicago chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, where the boy was identified as Wadea Al-Fayoume.
