Hard Choices in Gaza: Life-Altering Decisions Amid War Injuries

Shaimaa Nabahin, a 22-year-old from Gaza, had to make a life-altering decision after being wounded in an Israeli airstrike. Doctors presented her with two options: undergo amputation of her left leg or risk a potentially fatal blood poisoning. She chose amputation for a higher chance of survival.

The conflict in Gaza has severely strained its healthcare system. With only nine out of 36 hospitals operational due to the Israel-Hamas war, medical facilities are overcrowded and lack essential equipment and specialized staff like vascular surgeons. This has led to an increase in amputations due to inadequate treatment facilities for severe injuries.

Amputees in Gaza face numerous challenges, including limited access to prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation services. The conflict and blockade have led to scarcity of medical supplies, making it difficult for them to lead active lives. Additionally, the high risk of post-operative infections in war conditions further complicates their recovery.

After the airstrike, Shaimaa Nabahin was the only member of her family who was injured, though a number of her neighbors were killed. The airstrike caused a piece of cement to partially sever her ankle and arteries in her leg. Her family otherwise remained unharmed in the incident.

The Israel-Hamas war has had devastating effects on civilians in Gaza. Many have been killed or injured, with a significant number of casualties being women and children. The conflict has also led to widespread displacement, with a large portion of the population seeking refuge in shelters or with relatives, facing shortages of basic necessities like water and food.
