Hamburg Airport Shut Down Following Security Breach by Armed Individual

Operations at Hamburg Airport in northern Germany were brought to a halt on Saturday evening following an incident where a man breached airport security using his car, according to the German news agency dpa.

The federal police reported that the individual, armed with a gun, forced his way through a gate and subsequently discharged his firearm into the air twice. Authorities were previously alerted by the man’s wife about a potential kidnapping situation involving a child.

Subsequent reports from the police clarified that a child, aged four, was found in the man’s car. It is believed that the man is the father, who may have forcibly removed the child from the mother amidst a custody dispute.

Thomas Gerbert, a spokesperson for the federal police, informed dpa that an extensive deployment of law enforcement officers from both state and federal levels was promptly organized around the site and in the proximity of the man’s vehicle.

Negotiations were ongoing with the armed man, involving a psychologist, and police reassured that the risk to others was mitigated by the evacuation of all passengers from the airport premises.
