Child Hospitalized After Unintentional Shooting at Day Care Facility

A young child, not yet five years old, was critically injured after an unintentional shooting at a day care center in Las Vegas. The incident occurred when a firearm, left by a fleeing teenager, was found by the child on the playground of the facility, according to a statement from law enforcement on Friday.

Las Vegas Deputy Police Chief Reggie Rader reported that the child encountered the abandoned gun, handled it, and unintentionally discharged it. As of Friday afternoon, the child was reported to be in a critical yet stable condition in the hospital.

Law enforcement located and apprehended the teenage suspect in the vicinity of the day care in the northeastern part of the city. While Chief Rader refrained from revealing the identity of the individual due to their minor status, he confirmed that the individual is under 18 years of age.

The day care center’s corporate office, when contacted for a statement via email, did not respond immediately. Additionally, a representative of the day care, when reached by phone by The Big Big News, was not at liberty to discuss the incident.

The exact charges to be brought against the youth are under deliberation. Chief Rader indicated that discussions are ongoing with the district attorney’s office regarding the full spectrum of potential charges and the possibility of trying the suspect as an adult.

The events leading to the teenager’s arrival at the day care involved a dispute on a city bus where the teenager reportedly brandished a firearm and shot another individual. After the shooting, the teenager fled the scene, scaling a wall and inadvertently entering the play area of the day care. The victim of the bus shooting was also admitted to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, as per Chief Rader’s briefing.
