CEO Announces Final Phase of Motown Museum Expansion, Joined by Musical Icons Four Tops and The Temptations

The Chief Executive Officer of the Motown Museum, Robin Terry, declared that the last segment of the museum’s enlargement project is slated to commence in the spring of 2024. The announcement was made on Wednesday evening.

Terry also revealed that the fundraising efforts for the expansion have garnered $59 million, approaching the targeted sum of $65 million. “We are not yet finished, but we are committed to completing this project,” stated Terry during an exclusive event for donors. The event paid tribute to Motown legends the Four Tops and The Temptations.

Veteran member of The Temptations, Otis Williams, was also celebrated at the gathering. Earlier in the day, Williams engaged in a question-and-answer session with a collection of budding artists at the museum.

The renowned district where Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of Motown Records, established his musical dynasty more than half a century ago, has been revitalized in the past few years. Additions include educational initiatives, a creative center, and an exterior plaza for communal gatherings. The museum continues its operations in the iconic “Hitsville, U.S.A.” edifice located at 2648 West Grand Boulevard.

Robin Terry, who is also Gordy’s grand-niece and serves as the chair of the museum, disclosed plans for two forthcoming exhibits. The first, entitled “The Motown Atmosphere,” will present an interactive space filled with vintage Motown imagery to encapsulate the familial ambiance of the record label. The second, named “The Backstage Lounge,” will provide visitors the opportunity to explore the Motown catalogue and gain access to interviews with Motown veterans, such as Williams.

“It is an indisputable fact that there will never be another record label of Motown Records’ caliber,” Williams opined.

Motown Records was initiated by Berry Gordy in 1959. The museum was established by his late sister, Esther Gordy Edwards, in 1985, within the former headquarters of Hitsville. The museum has seen recording sessions by a host of musical legends, including not only the Four Tops and The Temptations but also Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, among others, before Motown relocated to California in 1972.
