On Friday, several influential unions, including the AFL-CIO, American Federation of Teachers, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, officially endorsed Biden’s campaign. Before addressing the union gathering, Biden visited the collapsed section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia via helicopter, which has caused traffic disruptions on one of the nation’s busiest highways. Attendees at the rally expressed optimism about Biden’s chances of reelection, highlighting his commitment to green jobs and construction through the bipartisan infrastructure law he signed. Education also plays a crucial role, as Jennifer McKinnon, a grade school librarian and member of the National Education Association, mentioned Biden’s personal connection to education through his wife, Jill, who is an English teacher.

Many in the crowd voiced concerns about potential criminal cases against Donald Trump in federal and New York courts, believing that it could complicate his electoral prospects. However, the 2020 AP VoteCast survey revealed that while Biden had greater support among self-identified union members, Trump’s economic populism resonated with some. The early front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2024, Trump’s appeal may face challenges due to ongoing legal issues.

Prior to this rally, Biden’s campaign activities primarily revolved around fundraising efforts. He attended private fundraisers in Greenwich, Connecticut, on Friday and has planned more events in California, Maryland, Illinois, and New York. Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, who advocated for a coordinated endorsement of Biden’s reelection campaign by top unions early in the cycle, expressed confidence that Biden would feel at ease among friends in Philadelphia.
