Former President Donald Trump is countersuing the advice columnist, E. Jean Carroll, who won a $5 million jury award in a sexual abuse lawsuit against him. Trump’s lawyers filed papers claiming that Carroll should pay him unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, as well as retract her statements accusing him of rape, despite the jury’s decision not to agree with her claims.

Carroll’s lawyers had previously filed a defamation lawsuit seeking an additional $10 million from Trump for his comments following the jury verdict in May.

During the trial, the jury found that Trump sexually abused Carroll in a luxury department store dressing room in 1996 and defamed her when he denied the attack. However, they did not support Carroll’s claim that Trump raped her during the encounter.

Trump has consistently denied the allegations and maintains that the department store incident never took place.

In his countersuit, Trump’s lawyers cited Carroll’s statements in a CNN interview where she continued to insist that he raped her despite the jury’s decision. They argued that she made these false statements with knowledge of their falsity or reckless disregard for the truth.

Carroll’s attorney, Robbie Kaplan, responded to Trump’s counterclaim, stating that Trump’s arguments were contrary to logic and fact. Kaplan also pointed out that several of the statements cited in the counterclaim were made outside the statute of limitations, and she predicted that the remaining statement would be dismissed by the judge.

Trump’s filing is seen as an attempt to delay accountability for his defamation of Carroll, according to Kaplan. Despite Trump’s efforts, Kaplan emphasized that accountability would come soon. It should be noted that Robbie Kaplan is not related to the judge overseeing the case.

During the initial trial, Trump did not personally appear, but excerpts from his recorded deposition were played for the jurors, including a video from 2016 where he made controversial comments about sexual assault.
