A Global Day of Remembrance for Jimmy Buffett: From Key West to the World

On Saturday, the globe transformed into a proverbial “Margaritaville” as throngs of admirers lamented the demise of iconic musician Jimmy Buffett, who passed away at 76.

Buffett’s signature tune, “Margaritaville,” has been indelibly linked to the Floridian city of Key West, the place where he once resided and solidified his lasting influence.

Clayton Lopez, a commissioner for the city of Key West, remarked, “The song is synonymous with our city. When one mentions ‘Margaritaville,’ it is understood that they are referring to Key West.”

A memorial event is scheduled for Sunday along Duval Street, a location known for its prominent culinary and musical establishments, including the Chart Room, a modest bar where Buffett performed during his formative years.

“His performances have shifted to a celestial stage,” observed Jimmy Weekley, proprietor of Fausto, an iconic Key West restaurant.

Widespread acclaim for Buffett was evident as commemorations flowed in throughout Saturday. President Joe Biden offered sympathies to the Buffett family and the entertainer’s extensive fan base, stating that “his voyage has now set course for new horizons.” Former President Bill Clinton communicated via X, formerly known as Twitter, saying Buffett’s “melodies have delighted countless individuals.” Additional tributes came from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and Paul McCartney, who both expressed their admiration for the late musician.

In New York, Matt Urben, an ardent Buffett enthusiast often referred to as a Parrothead, woke up to the unsettling news of Buffett’s death and later joined fellow fans to share fond memories. Urben, 32, emotionally disclosed that he had attended 48 Buffett concerts since his college years, describing them as “exceptionally memorable.”

Subsequently, Urben visited the Margaritaville restaurant in Times Square, an establishment that is part of Buffett’s extensive business portfolio and styles itself as “a tropical haven amid the hustle of New York City.”

While at the venue, Reid Johnson sang along to “Margaritaville.” Though not a devout fan, Johnson noted his familiarity with Buffett’s musical catalog.

Jeanne Fetner, who had traveled from Northern Virginia to New York City with her daughter Avery, chose to honor Buffett by visiting the restaurant. Fetner recounted a past trip to Key West, revealing how a visit to Buffett’s home led to a gracious message from his daughter Savannah.

Tracy Smith, hailing from Tampa, Florida, arrived at the Times Square establishment with her daughters while on an interlude between Broadway performances. Smith highlighted her fondness for Buffett’s work, saying, “His music radiates positivity. It brings joy to people.”
