Zimbabwe (pronounced /zɪmˈbɑːbweɪ/, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. It borders Zambia to the northwest, Mozambique to the east and South Africa and Botswana to the south. The capital city is Harare while its largest city is Bulawayo. Its official language is English; additionally Shona, Ndebele and numerous other languages are spoken by ethnic minorities within Zimbabwe’s population of more than 13 million people.

The region now known as Zimbabwe was once inhabited by groups such as San hunter-gatherers who were subsequently displaced by Bantu-speaking tribes migrating from Central Africa around 1000AD. Great Zimbabwe served as an important regional center for trade between traders from Asia, Europe, India and Arabia during this period prior to British colonization which began in 1890 with Cecil Rhodes’ pioneering British South African Company (BSAC). During colonial rule various forms of segregation including racial segregation were imposed upon black citizens until 1980 when Prime Minister Robert Mugabe led his ZANU party into power after winning independence elections resulting in majority rule over white minority government structures that had been established previously under BSAC governance structures and policies designed primarily for whites called “White Dominion”.

Post Independence saw economic growth through investments made into infrastructure development programs however these efforts stalled due largely due increasing public unrest related mainly poverty amongst citizens caused by hyperinflation reaching 500 billion percent at its peak 2009–10 making it impossible nearly impossible for residents even those employed full time jobs unable purchase food or basic necessities leading some observers characterize nation’s economy state “failed” or “collapsed” since mid 2000s . In 2017 President Emmerson Mnangagwa came into power following coup against President Mugabe ending 37 year reign last leader brought country forth transition democratic reform towards improved human rights freedom expression . Since then , he has worked improve relations neighbouring countries attract foreign investment increase access education health care services revitalise agricultural sector help provide better livelihoods thousands rural farmers throughout nation . Despite significant progress being made toward stabilizing economy political reforms remain slow process leaving many feeling like little meaningful change has taken place at national level 2021 still unclear if recent improvements can sustained next few years without further intervention outside sources .
