The government of Zimbabwe is based on the Constitution of Zimbabwe which was adopted through a referendum held in 2013. It is led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa who came into office following Robert Mugabe’s resignation after 37 years in power in 2017. The executive branch consists of the President and two Vice Presidents, while legislative authority lies with Parliament consisting of an upper house (Senate) and lower house (House of Assembly). The judiciary includes Supreme Court, High Court and subordinate courts; there are also traditional leaders’ courts for local matters such as land disputes between chiefs or village heads but these have no jurisdiction over criminal trials under ordinary law. Local Government elections take place every five years to elect mayors for councilors for each district or municipality within the country’s provinces; most recently this occurred during 2018/19 when ZANU-PF won 59% overall majority across all ten provinces due to low voter turnout from opposition supporters amidst claims it had been rigged against them. Since gaining independence from Britain 1980, Zimbabwe has experienced periods economic growth followed by recessions leading up to hyperinflation crisis 2008–09 where prices doubled daily at one point before stabilizing after new currency introduced 2009 – 10 US dollar adoption 2011 further contributed stability since then although unemployment remains high around 95%.
