Xi Jinping by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 87 Xi Jinping (born 15 June 1953) is a Chinese politician who has served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission since 2012, and President of the People’s Republic of China since 2013. He is also referred to as “China’s Paramount Leader”. Xi has been central in establishing an extensive anti-corruption campaign in mainland China that has seen thousands arrested and charged with corruption related offenses. Additionally, he sought to reduce poverty by launching targeted economic policies such as affordable housing schemes for rural citizens; increasing spending on social welfare programs; encouraging entrepreneurship among young people through employment subsidies; providing free tuition at public universities for students from poorer families; introducing health care reforms including guaranteed basic medical insurance coverage for all citizens regardless of income level or place of residence; creating a national pension system with mandatory contributions from employers and employees alike.
