Xavier Musketeers men’s basketball by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 42 The Xavier Musketeers men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program representing Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The school currently competes in NCAA Division I and the Big East Conference. As of 2020-21 season, they are coached by Travis Steele who was appointed on April 9th 2018 after Chris Mack left to become head coach at Louisville. Since joining the Atlantic 10 conference for the 1995–96 season, Xavier has won four regular-season A10 championships (2001–02, 2003–04, 2006–07 and 2016–17) as well as two tournament titles (2004 and 2017). Prior to that time it played an independent schedule. It was a member of the Midwestern City Conference from 1951 through 1978 before leaving for its current affiliation with A10/Big East. In addition to winning multiple regular season championships since their move to A10/Big East play in 1996-97; They have also advanced further than any other team within this league seven times into either Elite 8 or Sweet 16 rounds during March Madness tournaments: 1998 , 2004 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 2011 & 2018 . Xavier holds one National Invitation Tournament championship—in 1980—and appeared in three NIT Final Fours between 1968 and 1985 plus five additional appearances across six decades (1967-68 / 1979 – 80 / 2000 – 01 ). On February 3rd 2021 Brian Neal became 1st player ever under Coach Steele tenure at XU to score 1000+ career points while playing against St John’s Red Storm which resulted 94 – 75 victory over them Historically speaking Major Basketball names suchas Byron Larkin(HOF), David West(NBA all star ) Tyrone Hill were key contributors for successful runs throughout late 80s till early 2000s Under Coach Sean Miller era beginning 2005 another set of stars began rolling out suchas Justin Cage Derrick Brown Tu Holloway Jordan Crawford forming strong core group leading towards back2back Atlantic Ten Championship games @2007&2008 +Sweet16@2011 Later renowned NBA players like Semaj Christon Trevon Bluiett Edmond Sumner Myles Davis continued legacy taking program even higher reaching record 5 consecutive sweet sixteen trips starting 2014 ending 2019 respectively Current roster consists mostly freshmen underclassmen so far still boasts excellent level talent including KyKy Tandy Nate Johnson Dasan Cromwell Zach Freemantle Dwon Odom etc whose performances will be crucial factor deciding how far can Muskies go next march madness tournament cycle
