Wrestling is a form of physical combat sport where two competitors attempt to gain control over the other by using superior techniques such as grappling, throws, locks and holds. It has its origins in ancient times with evidence found from Greek wrestling dating back to 708 BC.

The modern Olympic Games features men’s freestyle wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling events since 1904. Women’s freestyle was introduced at the 2004 Summer Olympics while mixed martial arts (MMA) style competitions have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their inclusion in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Professional wrestlers also compete for championships within organizations like World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which originated out of 1980s professional wrestling promotions like National Wrestling Alliance (NWA).

In amateur competition, there are various styles including collegiate folkstyle, international Greco-Roman or Freestyle disciplines that each use different rulesets and scoring systems. Collegiate folkstyle follows high school regulations while international styles emphasize more on uniformity among athletes regardless of country origin by emphasizing certain offensive moves known as “exposure”. Additionally there are regional styles such Graeco-Laconian used mainly in Greece during antiquity.. There is no definitive set of rules across all forms but some core principles remain consistent throughout: gaining an advantageous position through takedowns/throws; maintaining said positions; scoring points based off predetermined criteria decided upon prior match start; escapes & reversals leading into new positions followed up with further offense for additional points when applicable ; neutralizing opponents offense via counter technique execution etc . The aim is usually either submission via joint lock or chokehold until opponent taps out or verbalizes surrender , pinning your opponent on his/her back for a period time required according governing body’s rule set ,or exhausting opponents stamina till they can no longer continue with bout safely deemed winner(colloquially referred as “technical knockout” ) .

Despite its long history, it continues to be practiced around world today albeit slightly modified depending region e.g Japan Sumo wresting -where strict adherence Shinto culture observed amongst practitioners -and Mongolian belt wrestling –where traditional costumes worn during bouts –are good examples this phenomenon taking place today .
